Understanding the Value of a Dollar

There are a lot of life lessons that you are going to want to impart on your children over time, and some are certainly more important than others. One of the lessons that you are going to want to share with your children is the value of a dollar, which is something they need to know before they begin spending their own money later in life.

Understanding the Value of a Dollar

One way that you can teach your child to understand the value of a dollar is to allow your child to have some money that they can spend to buy their own clothing. For example, if your daughter wants a pair of Apple Bottoms jeans, then what you can do is give her an allowance and then allow her to earn the money necessary to make the purchase. Then when they have enough money to make the purchase, they will understand how much hard work went into earning that piece of clothing, they will have a much better understanding of how much a dollar is really worth.

When your children are able to buy some of their own clothing, you can teach them a lot about money and how it works. This is a great lesson to impart on them as soon as they start having clothing and toy preferences, and it is a life lesson that they can grow with over time as well, which means that they can continue to learn as they grow up and will handle money better when they are adults.

How to Organize Your Doll Collection

Throughout history, dolls have been an integral part of children’s constructive and educational play. However, avid doll collectors may have dolls that are purchased as investments and not as toys for young children. Investment-quality dolls are still tempting to children, and should be carefully organized and stored in order to keep your collection safe.

Dolls should be displayed away from direct sunlight, smoke and excessive dust. A locked cabinet will protect dolls from wear and tear, as well as curious children’s fingers. Dust can work its way into doll hair, clothing and doll shoes, and can be hard to remove without damaging these items. Use doll stands to avoid contact with the chemicals in finished wood and to keep clothing from crushing.

To store dolls, always wrap them in acid free paper and use archival quality storage containers. Otherwise, chemicals from the cardboard will transfer to the dolls or clothing and stain or damage them. Natural fibers and leather items such as antique doll shoes should be kept from extremes in temperature and humidity, which can degrade the material quickly and reduce their value significantly.

Organizing dolls by manufacturer, age, or order of acquisition is a personal preference, but you should keep records including the purchase date, price paid photographs and receipts. This will make valuing the collection easier, and will also help if you ever sell items from your collection.

Doll lovers can share their love of dolls by displaying a child-friendly collection that can be set out for little ones. This will inspire their imaginations, satisfy their curiosity, and keep your valuable dolls from harm.

Decorating Your New Addition’s Nursery

Decorating the nursery for your new addition is one of the many fun things about having a baby. Here are two things to keep in mind when choosing how to decorate a nursery.

Furniture

Furniture items for your nursery are going to be the major expenses. Above all, and especially when it comes to the crib, safety is of utmost importance. Just because something looks nice and suits your decorating taste does not mean it is the safest choice for your baby. When choosing furniture that is safe, keep it within the theme you have chosen. Stained wood is very popular and will match just about any theme. This is especially handy as your child gets older and you need to change the theme or colors of the room.  Make sure you make a note of on your pregnancy calendar to make sure you don’t get behind in ordering your furniture or decorating.

Theme

You may want to decorate to a specific theme. Zoo and barnyard animals are always popular. These two themes can grow with your child, so you won’t have to change them constantly. They are also gender neutral. Speaking of gender, if you are waiting until the birth to find out the sex of the baby, then a gender-neutral theme is definitely the way to go. Neutral theme items include wall color, curtains, and carpet. Having a gender-neural background allows you to create a more gender-specific feel later on by adding smaller “boy” or “girl” items to the room.

If you aren’t sure what to do for your nursery, plan it out step by step. You can set small tasks each week throughout your pregnancy, which will help to evolve the look and feel for your baby when he or she arrives.

Your child’s education is one area where you need to be actively involved. When parents work closely with teachers, the child will have a greater chance of academic success in learning to enjoy school.

Parental involvement can make a significant mark on how well a child learns. For example, parents who read to their children at home actually help them to become better readers at school. These children also see reading as a positive activity and it may eventually turn into a lifelong habit. If the child has learning problems, the teacher and the parents should work closely together in order to find solutions. This kind of support helps to make the effort a united one and will give the child a greater chance of overcoming the obstacle to learning.

Teachers desperately need parental support when it comes to severe behavior problems at school as well. School professionals and parents can work together to identify the cause for the behavior and to outline a plan to deal with it. Without parental involvement, the school will have a much harder time helping the child to find more positive ways to deal with things. When a child has a disability parental help is vital when it comes to creating an individualized educational plan. These children deal with a number of issues it can be a combination of behavioral, physical and emotional problems.

Parents can best active in their child’s education by communicating regularly with classroom teacher, helping their child with homework and supporting the child when needed.

Financing Your Child’s College Education

Financing a child’s college education should start as early as possible in his or her lifetime. This can help to relieve parents of financial worries and burdens when it comes time to send their child off to higher education.

When parents start to plan out the process of having a child, saving for college should be one of their primary considerations. The easiest way to start this is by opening a savings account when the child is young and making regular deposits over the years. This gives parents a head start on having the money they need when the time comes. They can explore with a financial expert as the best way to get the most for their money.

When it does come time for the child to consider college, parents need to educate themselves about all the options available. The federal government offers financial aid in the form of Pell grants and student loans to help defray the costs. The parents need to be aware of payback options, interest rates and requirements to apply for these various types of funding support. Scholarships are also another option parents should start exploring with their teenager early on in high school. These can be in the form of scholarships from sports, for academic achievement and from a variety of local organizations.

By being well informed of all of the options available, parents will have a better chance of fully funding a college education without unnecessary financial strain. It is also important to get your child involved early on in saving for his or her own education as well.

Your family’s medical needs is one of the many important considerations that should be kept at the forefront. This starts by making changes in your family’s daily eating habits.

Parents are always doing their best to make sure that their children are healthy, happy and well rounded. One aspect that often gets overlooked to some degree is the daily eating habits within the family. Even if parents feed children a healthy set of three meals a day, snacking in between and beverage choices can have a negative impact on health. Carbonated soft drinks are a popular drink option that is found in most American refrigerators, often becoming a health threat when over-consumed. The high amount of sugar and caffeine in these drinks can help to contribute to obesity and other health issues.

Many of the snack foods such as potato chips, candy bars and ice cream treats can also cause problems if not eaten in moderation. If your family is going to have these items in your home, it is important to set limits on how much and when they are eaten. Foods with a high sugar content and that contain caffeine should be avoided starting in the early part of the afternoon. This allows caffeine enough time to get out of the body before going to bed that evening. Limiting foods and that have a lot of sugar in them can help to keep body weight and blood sugar levels in check. By taking these small steps, your family can start to have a healthier lifestyle.

Having a family budget is one of the wisest decisions that you can make. This not only helps you to save and to regulate your monthly spending but also helps you to teach your children good financial habits.

When establishing a family budget, it is important to have everyone involved from the beginning. Sit down and lay out everything that each family member spends money on throughout the month. You want to make a list of various activities such as shopping, food expenses, driving expenses, entertainment and eating out. You also want to lay out the bills must be paid each month. If you find you as a family are overspending in certain areas, find ways to limit certain activities to stay within your desired budget.

One example of an area that you can limit is eating out. You can do this by setting one night a week to eat out as a family and the rest of the time to eat at home. Work with your children to find ways where they can put limitations on their own spending activities and save money. The most important aspect of this process is to be the example for behavior you want your children to have. Being a financially responsible role model can help to develop positive spending behaviors in your children that will last them throughout their lifetimes. Once you have established your budget, it is important that the family sticks to it each month. Everyone in the family needs to help each other to be accountable in their spending.

When teenagers begin to enter puberty, a whole new type of parenting has to come into play. This can be a challenging time for both parents and teens, but can be weathered with the right parenting techniques.

Teenagers are struggling during this time of their lives to find a personal identity, fit in at school and deal with a myriad of physical and emotional changes within themselves. Parents are often at a loss to understand bizarre changes in moods, friends and clothing choices that many teens exhibit. This is a time when parents must have extended patience when dealing with these challenges in behavior. Teenagers need someone who can stay calm and help to guide them through this growth period.

A parent can handle many of these frustrations by being willing to listen and clearly communicating expectations. It is critical that your teenager feels comfortable enough to communicate with you. If they do not, there may be problems that go unnoticed because of lack of communication. You also need to be clear with your child about boundaries and expectations. It is important to know when to let your teenager have increased freedom and when to keep them in check. Your child, even if they many not like it, do get a sense of security from having healthy boundaries for their behavior.

Parents also have to understand at this time not to take their child’s action’s personally. Children will often say things they do not mean and are sorry for it later. With patience, boundaries and good communication you both can get through this time together in a positive manner.
